Saiyuki Commercial Doujinshi Anthologies

If something is popular enough to inspire a sizeable spread of doujinshi, commercial doujinshi anthology books usually follow. Profesional publication houses glean the best of the doujinshi crop to reprint, paying doujinshi-ka for the right to use their work. Unlike doujinshi, these books all have ISBN numbers and can be purchased at or ordered through Japanese bookstores.

Some anime and manga have spawned dozens of different commercial doujinshi anthology books, from a variety of publishers. Gundam Wing may be the record holder with at least 75. Currently, anime and manga sensation One Piece is closing in on 50--if it isn't there already--and hot manga Naruto also has a couple dozen different anthologies.

And then there's Saiyuki, with...two.

Th' hell...?!

It's not that Saiyuki doesn't have the doujinshi or following to support more commercial anthology books. There are simply some properties whose connections may not mind doujinshi but are against professionals making money with their creations without their permission. Saiyuki appears to be just such a case.

Saiyuki creator Kazuya Minekura began as a doujinshi-ka, and knows that some commercial doujinshi anthology publishers have paid doujinshi-ka a flat 2000 yen (about US $17) per page to reproduce their work in books that sold for at least 800 yen and topped 100,000 copies. Add to this the late-October 2001 news that Minekura-sensei has brought a lawsuit against Fusion Product, publisher of those two existing Saiyuki commercial doujinshi anthologies, for professional use of her property without permission (neither her name nor any copyright indicia other than Fusion Product's appear in either book)...and, well, it's pretty easy to understand why there are so few Saiyuuki commercial doujinshi anthologies!
