Reload Ricochet!

Saiyuki RELOAD, the anime incarnation of Kazuya Minekura's manga of the same name, is now airing weekly in Japan. But TV Tokyo and its affiliate stations aren't the only place episodes can be seen, what with pirates making them available for download worldwide on the Internet scant hours after broadcast. With episodes so accessible so soon, there doesn't seem much point in writing about them in detail, as I had planned to do before the series started. But it's hard not to comment after watching...so, here's some random yammering after (and sometimes even during!) each week's broadcast! (Grateful thanks go to Lux for maintaining her tremendous Saiyuki RELOAD screencap gallery, Are We There Yet?--please don't abuse it, folks!)

Sanzo pre-show promo...Usual opening titles...Recap: The Sanzo-ikkou arrives to save Gojyo from Kami-sama...Hey, this is a differently-animated version of Sanzo's line that they're the ones who will kill Gojyo!

Kami-sama may think Gojyo is his new toy, but Hakkai points out that none of them have given Gojyo to him. Gojyo is moved that the others would come to his defense, and a brief flurry of name-calling between Goku and Gojyo shows that things are once again right within the Sanzo-ikkou.

To Sanzo's annoyance, Kami-sama laughs that he'd heard that they were strong, but now that he sees them, they're hopeless. He asks Sanzo if he wants to give up being a Sanzo, as he's clearly not up to the task. That brings a hail of bullets from Sanzo, but Kami-sama slips away.

Goku charges after him, taking out a chunk of wall where Kami-sama had been--but Kami-sama reappears behind him, mockingly impressed with the damage. Hakkai unleashes a blast, but Kami-sama is again gone. He's too elusive for Gojyo's shakujou, too.

With no luck separately, the Sanzo-ikkou comes charging to attack together. A dorgi materializes in the smiling Kami-sama's hand, red beads solidify in mid-air--and the beads rocket into, and through, the four. They hit the ground, writhing in agony and spitting up blood as Kami-sama cheerfully calls, "Satisfied?"

Goku has taken a bead in the shin, and as he moans, an apparently-pitying Kami-sama approaches...and gouges the bead out with a finger. Goku's screams are horrible--and his sudden silence that follows is even more awful. Sanzo struggles to see what's happened, but he can hardly move.

Kami-sama ask Sanzo if he knows muichimotsu--"If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha; if you meet your ancestor, kill your ancestor." Kami-sama's teacher had taught him that. And it's clear to Kami-sama that Sanzo is too attached to various things, such as winning, living...so he isn't fit to be a Sanzo. Kami-sama reaches down and helps himself to Sanzo's kyoumon! Exploding up with his last strength, Sanzo pulls his gun--but Kami-sama floors him again with a point-blank kick to the head. There's no more opposition from the others, bloody and unmoving, as Kami-sama puts on the kyoumon. Commercial break...

A bandaged Gojyo is vacantly flipping his lighter open and shut, open and shut, as he sits on the floor back at the inn and remembers Kami-sama's parting words. Kami-sama had been disappointed that his audience couldn't seem to hear him anymore, but when he puts a foot on Sanzo's head and bids him farewell, he's suddenly snagged from behind by the chain of Gojyo's shakujou. The impact knocks Kami-sama through the wall, but he emerges without a scratch. With a firm grip on Gojyo's chain, he begins to silently mouth something--and the chain yanks Gojyo forward, and then sends him hurtling against the opposite wall. Since Gojyo hadn't gone to sleep like a good boy, he's going to be punished...but as Kami-sama moves to do it, Hakuryuu flies into his face! The fiercely flapping dragon even manages to draw blood!

Gojyo yells for Hakuryuu to transform, and then drags the other three into the jeep and hops behind the wheel. "What are you doing?" demands Kami-sama. "Getting away, asshole!" Gojyo snarls, and peels away down the steep stone stairway!

With a shout of "That's not fair!", Kami-sama flies after them--but from the back of the jeep, Hakkai fires a blast that helps derail the pursuit. Gojyo goes like hell, and Kami-sama watches them leave, laughing.

Back to Gojyo and the lighter. He had gotten the three to the inn, and the innmaster, still grateful for Gojyo and Sanzo dispatching the punks a few episodes ago, had taken them in. That was four days ago. The innmaster urges Gojyo to sleep, to help him recover from the terrible loss of blood, but Gojyo insists he's fine, and keeps up his vigil from the floor.

In the same room is Hakkai, bandaged and in bed. As he wakes up, he's worried to hear the innmaster admit he's not optimistic about Sanzo's condition. Sanzo is in the adjoining room, and has not woken up since they got there.

Hakkai is unhappy about being so slow to heal. Goku was the fastest to heal, but Gojyo grumps that the monkey is out of control--not eating, not talking. Even now, Goku is outside, brooding. Goku is like a wounded animal, Hakkai notes, as he gently pets his adoring Hakuryuu. "An animal that's been thoroughly defeated..."--and that's what happened to them all, he adds quietly. "We lost."

Suddenly Sanzo, still unconscious, starts thrashing violently and yelling. Gojyo tries to hold him down to keep him from hurting himself even worse. The innkeeper runs to get a pain-killer, but Hakkai, having staggered to the doorway, observes that Sanzo's pain might not be caused by his wounds.

Sanzo remembers that when he was young, Koumyou introduced him to a friend from old times: another Sanzo whose name is fuzzed out now in memory. The pupil of that Sanzo--name not given but it's young Kami-sama, who's about Kouryuu's size--was also along that day and presented Kouryuu with a doll...a doll whose head suddenly falls off. "Oh, it's broken!" comes Kami-sama's voice, and as an image of Koumyou shatters, blood appears on Kouryuu's hands. The adult Kami-sama appears behind him. Before them are Gojyo, Hakkai, and Hakuryuu, lying dead in pools of blood. "You broke them," Kami-sama tells the trembling Kouryuu. Now Sanzo is an adult, kneeling in the midst of his dead companions. "You're weak," says Kami-sama, "and they're all dead. You aren't fit to be a Sanzo." He again takes Sanzo's kyoumon. Sanzo shoots at him--but to his horror, the person he's shot is Koumyou! As Kami-sama laughs, Sanzo remembers Koumyou being killed by youkai.

Now, late at night, Sanzo sits bolt upright in bed, awake--with sentinel Gojyo sitting nearby, watching from the floor. Sanzo struggles up out of bed. "What are you doing?" asks Gojyo, eyeing him. "I'm going," Sanzo grits out. "That thing is mine."

"If you can go..." muses Gojyo quietly, and Sanzo finds his legs won't cooperate. Although he soon falls, he still tries to pull himself across the floor (backed by a very moving piano interlude...oh please oh pleeeeeze let there be a soundtrack CD, and let this be on it!)--but when his panting progress ends and he can't make it any further, Gojyo lifts him back into bed.

Outside in the moonlight, Goku punches a wall. "All right," he decides...

Next week, the Sanzo-ikkou try to regroup. It's "Oretachi No Yarikata ~Dawn~."

UraSai (instead of reading "UraSai," the four read the tiny calligraphy credit at the lower right of the screen: "Daiji: Minekura Kazuya"!): "Hamigaki" ("Tooth-brushing"). All four are brushing their teeth and making grunty sounds, almost as if talking to themselves while brushing. Gojyo suddenly starts chortling, apparently remembering something funny, and whacks half-asleep Goku. Goku swallows. "Don't swallow!" the others scold him, and Goku blushes. (Minekura-sensei wrote it...)

This episode brings us to the end of the Sanzo-ikkou segments of Vol. 8 of the Saiyuki manga. Next week, on to Vol. 9!

Opening recap: Sanzo reminds Goku it was Gojyo's choice to leave; Sanzo and Hakkai argue; Gojyo reaches the foot of the steep stone staircase.

In the forest, Goku has been bathing in a river, trying to get the inked tantras off. Hakkai wonders to Sanzo why Kami-sama sealed the entrance to the forest. Goku finds a used cigarette butt that Hakkai recognizes as being Gojyo's brand, and they decide on a likely-looking direction to search.

Gojyo is climbing and climbing the stone staircase, wondering how many hours he's been at it. A thick mist rolls in. He sits for a smoke, and remembers encountering misty conditions in another forest, on a boyhood excursion with his older brother, Jien. Despite Jien's warnings to be careful in the fog, Gojyo steps off a cliff! Jien snatches his hand and manages to pull him back up, and repeats his frequent big-brotherly advice to not cry. Gojyo won't--much as he might want to, seeing the scrape Jien's arm took in saving him.

Suddenly, up runs their sobbing mother--Gojyo's stepmother--who tackles Jien in her hysteria that she might be left alone. Gojyo can only stand apart and watch as Jien holds her. He didn't cry then...and he recalls how he didn't cry after that either, even when she attacked him.

Now, through the thick mist hovering on the stone stairway, his stepmother emerges! She doesn't have her ax from the manga version of this scene, but she'll still be just as glad when he's gone--and she shoves him down (knee in the groin and all--yow!), crying in her rage and trying to choke him. Gojyo knocks her away...and she disappears. Moments pass, and he wonders whether the fog caused hallucinations somehow--but then suddenly she's back, getting her grip from behind, and she's got him! Why should she let go? He was supposed to have died back then. And even now, he's still all alone, isn't he?

For a moment, it seems things will go as they nearly did those years before...but then he swings the shakujou. She shrieks (this chilling thing that goes on and on!)--and then she's gone, flying apart in a flurry of red beads.

Sanzo's words come back to him: "If you die, nothing changes. But if you're alive, there are things that can change." "I'm alive," muses Gojyo, "and maybe I'm what changed." He finds himself crying--and thinking that maybe "don't cry" actually meant it's all right to cry. Why didn't his damn brother just come out and say that?

He continues to climb, but the mist seems to be sapping his strength. The top is in sight, though--and as he struggles up the last few steps on all fours, he notices that they're draped with a shadow. Kami-sama is looking down from the top with a smile, and welcomes him to his castle. "Was my 'Maze of Mist' fun?" Kami-sama asks. "I thought I'd puke," replies Gojyo.

Commercial break...

The rest are climbing the stairs--Hakkai cheerful, Sanzo cranky about the endless stairway, and Goku chugging along well ahead of them. They hear footsteps coming down--it's Gojyo! He tells them that he defeated Kami-sama, and that the group should head back to the bottom...acting as if their break-up had never happened.

Goku abruptly punches him. Gojyo falls, and Hakkai's foot is on his hand ("Coming back so nonchalantly--you really have guts," Hakkai smiles). Sanzo levels the gun at him. Gojyo whips out the shakujou and demands, "How did you know I'm not him?"--prompting a deadpan beat as the others realize, "So that isn't him?!"

The fight gets underway quickly, and the three are merciless--especially after Hakkai tells Goku to think of this fake Gojyo as being the real one. The real one who has made Sanzo so irritated, made Hakkai so super-scary, and made Goku have to get written on...! The unfortunate fake takes some terrible abuse, and disappears in a shower of red beads.

At the top of the stairs, Gojyo announces his intent to take down Kami-sama, who doesn't understand what he's angry about but is amused all the same. Gojyo goes after him, swinging and kicking, but Kami-sama evades him easily. "Why don't you use any weapons?" Kami-sama asks. Gojyo just wants to take him apart with his hands.

But the fight is no longer one-sided once Gojyo pursues him into the shrine. Kami-sama shoots his strings of beads into Gojyo in vicious jabs, and Gojyo goes down. "Broken already?" asks Kami-sama--and his disappointment becomes delight at Gojyo's answering kick. The redhead is fun and durable!

Gojyo says he won't forgive him for what happened to Kinkaku and Ginkaku. Kami-sama explains that he had wanted some new toys, so had gathered them to him...and since they were his, he could do what he wanted with them. Gojyo's raging protest is cut short by a noose of beads hoisting him into the air. On the ground, Kami-sama giggles--he's got a new toy now!

A gunshot from the doorway abruptly shatters the bead string. Sanzo, Hakkai and Goku have arrived, and Gojyo's shock at seeing them is almost as huge as his shock when they try to stomp the hell out of him! It's his punishment for using empty cans as ashtrays, Hakkai tells him, and Gojyo admits he was bad.

Sanzo informs Kami-sama that they're the ones who will kill Gojyo, so they'll take the idiot off his hands now. But Kami-sama refuses with a smile--because, he explains, this is his new toy.

Meanwhile, Hwang asks Nii about Kougaiji...

Next week: Kami-sama vs. the Sanzo-ikkou. A bead falls, leaving a bloody spot... It's "Kudakareta Mono ~Pain~."

UraSai: "Kowasareta Mono" ("Broken Thing"). Uh-oh--Goku spots Sanzo's gun lying on a table. He picks it up and aims it. Gojyo grabs it away for a try. Goku wants to play with it some more. They accidentally drop it, and there's a shattering sound! Soon after, Sanzo is not pleased to find a colorful, cartoony toy gun (kind of resembling a hair blow-dryer) where his own gun had been. From around the corner, sweat-dropping Goku and Gojyo watch him grimly aim, pull the trigger and hold it, making the toy gun continually flash and make silly noises. Goku whispers fearfully, "I wonder if he's mad?" Gojyo thinks it's likely...

This week's pre-show intro is Gojyo's--but I hadn't started the tape yet! Oh well...

Recap from last time: Kinkaku dies, and Kami-sama makes his appearance. Gojyo attacks but Kami-sama disappears, leaving behind his laughter.

The Sanzo-ikkou-minus-Gojyo is driving along in unhappy quiet. Goku can't even say he's hungry without getting shushed, but at least a town is near.

Flashback to their realization that Gojyo is gone. Goku suspects that Gojyo has gone after that strange guy, and Hakkai agrees. What should they do? Leave at noon, decides Sanzo--just as Hakkai expected. Goku protests, but as Sanzo points out, it was Gojyo's choice to leave them.

In the present, they reach the town. Sanzo takes the hungry Goku on ahead to find someplace to eat, leaving Hakkai to shop. The result is several bags of provisions, and Hakkai finds himself automatically asking Gojyo for a hand--but there's no Gojyo.

The three sit down to eat, and it's been a long time since Goku has had a leisurely meal; Hakkai smiles that his usual rival for the food isn't there. Oops.

Goku wonders what's going on with Kougaiji, reminding Hakkai about kyoumon. If Kami-sama is a real Sanzo, ponders Hakkai, wouldn't he have a kyoumon?

There are five Tenchikaigen kyoumon in all, Sanzo explains. He accounts for two of them. The Sanzo eaten by the scorpion youkai in the desert also had one. So, other than himself, there should be two other real Sanzos now.

Goku and Hakkai are surprised that he doesn't know the other Sanzos, and that there isn't an Association of Sanzos or Sanzo Union or something. But Sanzo does remember that more than 10 years ago, when he was young, another Sanzo had met with Koumyou at Kinzanji. He dimly recalls that that Sanzo had a vulgar mouth. There was something else unpleasant about the man, too...but what it was eludes him now.

Sanzo has also forgotten his lighter--and Hakkai and Goku can't help much there. He crumples his unlit cigarette and stalks off, leaving Goku with the feeling that something strange is happening.

Later, in their room, Sanzo and Hakkai are going over possible routes on the map. Hakkai's recommendation brings a disparaging remark from Sanzo. "Aren't you smoking a bit too much in the room?" Hakkai counters. "Open a window," Sanzo says--and then, hardly missing a beat, adds a demand for coffee. "Didn't you hear me?" he snaps when Hakkai isn't fast enough. "Coffee!"

Hakkai thumps the pot down with a scary smile, inviting him to pour it himself.

Meanwhile, Goku has his hands full with a fussy Hakuryuu, who finally flaps over to Hakkai. Goku insists he had just been playing but Hakuryuu had snapped at him; Hakkai scolds Goku because Hakuryuu gets angry if someone tries to stop him from sleeping.

Goku insists there's something strange. Sanzo snarls at him to shut up. Hakkai goes into his usual peacekeeper role, gently urging Goku to put up with Sanzo's snarling--phrased just that way! The words start to fly from all sides, and a vicious shouting match erupts between Sanzo and Hakkai. (An aside: Just as last episode featured an awesome performance by Hiroaki Hirata as Gojyo, this episode belongs to Akira Ishida, taking us into new territory with Hakkai!)

Goku pipes up that if they don't go back and find Gojyo, this is the way things will get. Sanzo forbids him to say that name again. "Listen to me!" yells Goku, and smacks Sanzo in the face with a pillow.

Yup, Goku's going to die now.

But suddenly, their room's window is shattered by a band of youkai sent by Gyokumen to take Sanzo's kyoumon and his life. Sanzo, Hakkai and Goku don't have time for this crap--and as the carnage commences, the three chorus at the top of their lungs that after this, they're going to go find Gojyo and kill him!

Commercial break. The Saiyuki RELOAD Playstation 2 game comes out next month (reserve it in advance and get a special CD)...the Saiyuki RELOAD anime series DVD Vol. 2 goes on sale Feb. 25...

A hungry, whiskery Gojyo washes his face in a forest stream. (Ohhhh my...!) He walks on into the forest, and the arms of Kami-sama seem to fold over the path he has taken.

The other three reach the forest, which has done a surprising amount of growing in the three or four days since they had been there with Kinkaku. Goku runs into the forest--and pops back out where he entered. He tries again. And again, and again.

Hakkai explains that it seems to be a kekkai--a sort of knotted world. People in the nearby town reported that someone looking like Gojyo had entered the forest a few days ago, Sanzo notes; he must have had no trouble going in then. Hakkai wonders whether this was Kami-sama's doing, and Goku worries that Gojyo's in for trouble, trapped inside and not able to get back out.

Sanzo tries firing into the woods. Not one of his better ideas--the bullets shoot back out at them!

After some reflection, Sanzo thinks that this kekkai was created by magic, and that Goku might be able to get inside after all...Some Goku shrieks later, the monkey has had various tantras both written on and pasted onto him. He plunges into the forest--and doesn't come back out.

As they wait for some sign, Hakkai hesitantly asks Sanzo if he thinks they're in time. Sanzo doesn't know. Just then there's a huge crash from within the woods, sending birds flying. They'll try to head in now--but Hakkai recommends that Goku get a bath before they get started.

Meanwhile, Gojyo is at the foot of a long outdoor staircase, lined with what appear to be torii gates, and guesses it must be the entrance to Kami-sama's shrine.

At the top, safely inside the place and sitting upon a huge pile of toys, Kami-sama sings, "One more time...not yet...one more time..." to the tinkly music-box-sounding tune coming from a child's record player. "Oh, someone is coming to play!" he realizes. The episode fades out on his giggles.

Next episode: Hakkai heads up the stairs behind Goku. Gojyo's at the top. He's locked in battle with Goku! Kami-sama's at the top of the staircase, peering down with a smile. It's "Sentou ~Don't Cry~."

UraSai: "Weapon." Gojyo and Goku take down a protesting Hakkai, and outfit him in a Mazinger-esque robot suit to battle Sanzo!
