Neko (Heero) No Techou ("Heero-Cat's Notebook")
by Finder-W
Shown above is an original drawing of Heero-kitty (and a mildly protesting Spare Trowa Head) by Mukai Yuuya of Finder-W, from the collection of Kagenami Q. This month's Doujinshi Of The Month selection was made by Simone Maxwell, who is currently babysitting the bulk of Kagenami Q's doujinshi collection.
Nothing beats my selection for the Doujinshi of the Month: the delightfully-drawn Heero-kitty books by Finder-W. No, I'm sorry, I couldn't possibly narrow it down to just one volume of these. You'll just have to deal with it.
Neko (Heero) No Techou, "Heero-Cat's Notebook," has gone at least eight volumes (and a couple
of collections), and it's both cute and a wee bit twisted--one of my favorite combinations. It follows the adventures of our pal Duo Maxwell and his weird little pet--an alarmingly cute version of Heero with cat ears and tail, still wearing Heero's outfit and shoes but about the size of your average housecat. They share an apartment, and many of the problems that cats and their humans share: Heero-kitty chews stuff up,
won't eat anything but the most expensive food, and sleeps on Duo's face. He also claws Duo to
bits every time they visit the vet, who looks suspiciously like Treize.
Dorothy also shows up from time to time; her pet is Relena-kitty, a cute little version of Relena with kitty ears and a long fluffy tail, who seems to absolutely hate Heero-kitty, for she chases him and tries to shred him every time she sees him. It's just because she loves him so, you see.
But wait, there's more! At this point, I strongly suspect the influence of a weird ndigestion-produced dream (note to the staff of Finder-W: cut down on the 30-inch pizzas right before bed!), as there are elements here that are just too bizarre to have any other source. Quatre lives down the hall from Duo, and has a vial of
apparently-magic pills, for when he gives Heero-kitty one of these pills, the cat temporarily turns into a
normal-sized Heero, but still with cat ears and tail (and still unable to speak). Quatre looks at this version of Heero-kitty with ill-concealed lust, but Duo always manages to make a tactful retreat with his furry friend in tow--and since the effects of the pill seem to be very short-lived, nothing untoward ever happens.
Trowa also occasionally pops in--literally, as he tends to suddenly appear about five feet in the air in a horizontal position, from the apparent wormhole that he seems to inhabit. (I'm starting to suspect my inability to read Japanese is a real problem in this case...) It tends to mess with Duo's mind when Trowa shows up, although Trowa manages to save Duo's hide a couple of times through the course of these books, and he
also saves Heero-kitty the time Duo accidentally shook Heero-kitty out of the futon and over the
apartment balcony railing while putting the futon outside to air out.
And I'm not even going to mention the closet full of spare Trowa heads that Heero-kitty likes to sleep in and occasionally drag out and start chewing on. Whoops! Sorry! Forget I said that.
Even Wufei gets into the act--he's usually out lurking in the garden, waiting for Heero-kitty to come out so he can chase him. Heero-kitty always, but always, gets the best of Wufei.
Aside from their sheer hallucinogenic silliness and the wonderful art, the best part of the Heero-kitty books is that, even though he's small and cute and can't talk (aside from things like "N?" and "Nyaa-oow"), Heero-kitty retains enough of his human personality that he's still very subversive and sneaky. Imagine how dangerous a housepet would be if he knew how to use plastic explosives! In one instance, Heero-kitty makes the mistake of
betraying his intelligence in front of Sally Po--she catches him trying to log onto the computer. I know my cats always give me That Look when I catch them trying to log onto the computer: "You are most hateful."
So there, then, is my selection for the Doujinshi Of The Month. The art and the storylines are
superior in all of these books, and any of them would be well worth adding to your collection.
